The girl and the gray cat.

"Here, honey." I said quietly, holding a bundle of four one dollar bills out to her. I was careful not to put it in front of her line of sight because she was reading a beat up paperback while and elderly cat on a harness snoozed on her thigh. She held the book in such a way as the cat could open his eyes half way and read a paragraph or two between dozing. Like most cats, he liked to read, but the story line wasn't gripping enough to keep him from napping.

She was beautiful. She looked up at me, gasping in surprise that someone would be so nice, so very kind. I didn't want to tell her that I had a gray cat at home and that's why when I saw them going into the store I knew I'd be handing them money on the way out. She had pulled the cardboard sign under her, closed for business, tired of trying to meet everyone's eye. All you could see were the words Me and My Cat, upside down. But I knew what the sign said. She took the money carefully from my fingers and smiled widely at me. "Thank you so much." she breathed. "You two take care of each other." I said.

I cried all the way home in the car. It's just been one of those days. You know?
