Tapas bar not topless bar.
2003-07-27 11:41 a.m.

Friday Rebecca and I went to a tapas bar for dinner then to Shakesprov for some Shakespearian improv. When I told Simon that we were going to a tapas bar he said "What!? Youre going to a topless bar?" No. TAPAS. Like little plates of yummy shareable Spanish food. Duh. Shakesprov was fun. We got to be wild animals. Anytime someone said "beasts" or "animals" we were told to make wild animal noises. We even managed to get one of the big laughs for the night with our animal noises. Lots of fun. Theyre doing it again in August. ComedySportz also does quarterly workshops (think Whose Line is it Anyway training). I may have to do that.

Make-over mania!
2003-07-25 11:05 a.m.

I watched Queer Eye for the Straight Guy on Bravo last night. I loved it, it's just as fun as BBCs What Not to Wear except with five catty men. My favorite moment was when Carson, the fashion savant, was having a conniption fit because he could only find one pair of shoes in the guy's closet. They made over Tom so he could ask his girlfriend to move in with him. When we finally get to see his girlfriend *cough-skank!-cough* Carson squeals "There's a hooker in Trenton who's wondering where her boots are!" Fun! Fun! Fun!

My .17 windfall.
2003-07-24 10:15 a.m.

Last night I lugged a huge bag full of change to Fred Meyers and poured it into the big machine that gives you $.008 for every $.01. After processing all the change and spitting out a few Canadian coins, I got back $37.17. What should I spend my windfall on? I'm not buying anymore books until I read the sixteen novels I have sitting by my bed. When I was in college I had books everywhere in my house. Stacks by the bathtub, in the kitchen, by the couch and one half of my bed was filled with books. Seriously, from the pillows down to the end, stacks and stacks of delicious books. I devoured trashy novels, I studied Medieval, Victorian, Early American and Harlem Rennaissance literature. I read science fiction and vampire novels for escapism. I inhaled academic articles on Jane Austen, the Bronte sisters and Chaucer. I read Shakespeare outloud by candlelight to my cat. Now that I have to share my bed and the rest of the house, I have to keep my books tidy. I still have stacks by the tub, on the bedside table and by the couch. Otherwise my books have to sit diligently on their new bookshelves which have quickly become full. Now there are a few stacks starting on the floor and on the dining room table. My dream is to own a giant three story Victorian house (perferrably in Ladd's circle) where I can have a mahogany library with one of those wheeled ladders. I also want a red velvet chaise lounge where I can read and sip port on dark winter nights.

Rebecca and I had a talk awhile back on how books influence us. Rebecca takes on the emotions of the characters she's reading about and carries that around with her. For me the characters follow me around and I have very long drawn out conversations with them. The other day I spend half an hour discussing the finer points of gothic interior design with Jean Claude only to realize that he doesn't really exist and I'd been sitting at my desk not doing anything for half an hour. This often works with books that Im writing as well. If I take a break from writing, my characters will invariably come and find me, either in a dream or during a pause in the day. Lately, Lexi has been pestering me. She wants to go on another adventure. She wants a tattoo. She wants to fall in love. She wants to go out into the world and kick some more ass. All this from a 17 year old girl I created.

Images of summer.
2003-07-23 10:17 a.m.

Here are a few images of summer. First we have a picture of Shawn and Michael from their wedding on June 21st. It was raining outside but this picture makes the day look vibrant. I wish Shawn didn't have her coat on so you could see her pretty dress but it was a bit chilly.

Here are a couple of pictures taken of my neighbors burnt out car. I hope they catch the idiots that set it on fire. Bastards! That round thing is the steering wheel.

Finally a really cute picture of my neighbor's cat. We call her Stripey Girl. She likes to hang out in the birdbath at night because after the sun evaporates all the water it stays toasty warm in the evening and she can lie in it until her owners come home from work.

Fire!
2003-07-22 9:56 a.m.

I was pulled out my dream world around 4:30am when I heard someone in the street screaming "Fire! Fire! Fire!" over and over again. Sometimes people scream in our neighborhood late at night for no good reason. The bars close at 2:00 so anything you hear between 2:00am and 4:00am is kind of iffy. We also have the crazy lady who has been known to scream and jump into traffic, but there was something about this scream that made me take action. Being the good fireman's daughter that I am, I jumped out of bed, threw on some sweat pants and knocked on the bathroom door. "Simon! Someone's shouting fire, I'm going to investigate!" I went out into the darkness and looked skyward. There were orange dancing shadows coming from the front of my neighbor's house. I walked around the corner and saw Melissa standing with a cell phone limp in her hand as she watched her '89 Saab go up in flames. This was no small engine fire. The entire vehicle was engulfed in eight foot high flames that were catching the tree she was parked under on fire. We watched in solomn silence until the fire department came and quickly put out the flames. Simon finally came outside and started treating the scene like a homicide "Do you have any enemies? Disgruntled boyfriends? Run anyone over lately?" The fire department suspects arson as she had the windows rolled down in her car and the fire appears to have started from the inside. There was also evidence up and down the street that other cars have been rifled through and there were CDs strung around the sidewalks. Apparently the criminals didn't care for the sweet lilting voices of Dido and Sarah McLaughlin.

Lazy days of summer.
2003-07-21 10:23 a.m.

It was a nice long weekend for me. I took Thursday and Friday off of work to further celebration of my birthday month. On Friday night I went in for a massage and had a really intense deep tissue massage. I had issues with my shoulders and upper back. It felt like they took all my muscles off my body, ironed them flat and then reattached them. My upper back was a little sore for the weekend but my shoulders feel like they're brand new and no longer hurt at all! Since I had a bit of money buring in my checking account, I purchased a series of three massages. That means I have two more to schedule in the future. Since my tattoo appointment is in two weeks, I'll probably have to wait until that heals up before I can go back in. Of interest, there were a lot of men at the Spa on Friday. Two men receiving services and another two who were working. I think men are finally catching on how nice and relaxing the spa can be.

Saturday and Sunday were spent avoiding the sun and reading. I'm engulfed in Juliet Barker's "The Brontes: a Lifetime in Letters." There's something about reading correspondence that is so intimate and voyeristic. I especially like Charlotte's letters. It's a shame that her letters to Mary Taylor are lost as she never wrote of her writing to Ellen Nussey. I'm also in the midst of reading Jasper Fforde's "The Eyre Affair" and Laurell K. Hamilton's "A Kiss of Shadows." I highly recommend "The Eyre Affair" for anyone who likes British Literature and British humour.
