The sin trade

In September I listened to a story on Public Radio about a mutual fund company that was putting together a Christian mutual fund that would include stocks only in companies that were keeping in tune with Christian values. I thought "gee that's nice" and then the wheels in my head started turning. Wow, what about a sin fund? So here is Kung Fu Kitten's sin mutual fund. I plugged these into a pretend portfolio on the Motley Fool site on (creepy music plays) September 10, 2001 and "bought" 50 shares of each:

ASCA: Ameristar Casinos - gambling.

BUD: Budweiser - promoting underage drinking all over the world.

HDI: Harley Davidson - heartily endorsed by the Hells Angels.

JNJ: Johnson & Johnson - largest producer of birth control and condoms.

MCD: McDonald's - encouraging people to eat meat and high fat meals all over the globe.

PFE: Pfizer - One word: Viagra.

PLA: Playboy - Magazines, video and Cable.

So far the simple return rate is at 3% or up $375.00. I'll continue to monitor this fund during the year and see how it does. I wanted to add a tobacco company like Phillip Morris but I just couldn't do it with all the lawsuits and weird health insurance things going on. I just think it's a bad investment right now.

Simon thinks I gave him my cold. I told him anthrax isn't contagious and he must have gotten his cold from someone else.

I started reading a new book on the bus today: "Fabulous Feasts, Medieval Cookery and Ceremony." I went to graduate school for medieval literature so I actually find this stuff fascinating.
